Revisiting tne Betjeman Millenium Park, Wantage, Oxfordshire with The Betjeman Society and Trustees
A memorial need not be a headstone or plaque - we were commissioned to make this new stone vase for flowers as a unique and special tribute to a Churchwarden. Alec shaped the limestone by hand and carved the design and lettering boldly, to make a beautifully textured tactile form.
Alec delivered the final stones to Kew, London, completing his Poetry In The Landscape artwork.
This 'Water' themed work is hand carved in natural stone with poetry by Dr Alyson Hallett, and was serenaded on unveiling by Mhairi Lawson.
Alec has just completed this beautiful memorial headstone. He carved the lettering by hand into a large slab of Hornton stone - a gorgeous mottled blue green grey coloured stone quarried near Banbury. The cross and initials were gilded with 22ct gold leaf and a small salamander was carved creeping up the side of the stone, chosen as a specially significant symbol for the family.
On the day that Alec installed the headstone in the Churchyard, he found a small live salamander creature as he prepared the ground.
Alec's hand carved memorial standing stone at Westmill Woodland Burial Ground, with fire bowl before a ceremony.
