Fiona & Alec Peever Lettering & Scuplture

COMMISSIONED WORK

Fiona and Alec provide a bespoke, personal service from concept and creation through to installation:

We are happy to discuss small personal commissions or larger projects, by guiding clients throughout each stage of the commissioning process.

Every commission, including the lettering and overall layout, is thoughtfully designed, hand drawn and made with attention to the individual requirements of the situation.

All our designs are original compositions that we make to the highest levels of craftsmanship, using the finest materials.

We enjoy challenges and can use modern materials and techniques alongside our traditional craft skills.

We can deliver and install to any part of the UK or overseas.

COMMISSIONING A MEMORIAL from Alec Peever

The process usually begins with a meeting, either at my studio or at the graveside. This is important because it enables all parties to discuss possibilities and preferences, informally.

Often, this is the first time that a family have been faced with commissioning a hand-made artwork, so it is necessary for an understanding to be established between the clients and the person who will eventually make it.

I will give advice as to the kind of stone to use; the size limitations and the local regulations. Wording needs to be agreed at this point because it will ultimately determine the look of the memorial. Sometimes, the opportunity exists to include a poetic quotation or a symbolic image.

It is not necessary to decide on the shape or the overall design at this stage, as this will develop during the later design period.

The next stage is for me return to my studio to consider all the information and to embark on a hand-drawn design, showing exactly how the memorial might appear, including indications of size and shape, style of lettering and a detailed cost outline. No advance charge is made up to this point.

I will either email or post the proposal together with a letter, explaining my thinking. Sometimes, the family will suggest changes to the design, which I am happy to incorporate, whenever possible.

Once the design has been agreed, it will be necessary to seek official approval from the keepers of the burial ground. The rules on this vary enormously throughout the country. Some charge fees, while others don’t.

When permission has been granted, I will order the stone from my suppliers and at this stage, I may ask for an advance payment to help with my initial costs.

The stone can sometimes take several weeks to arrive, but when it does and work has begun, the family are welcome to visit the studio to witness the carving process first-hand.

On completion, the stone will be transported to the burial ground and firmly fixed in the ground. Again, the family are welcome to attend.

Only when the stone has been finished and fixed to everyone’s satisfaction will an invoice for the balance of the account be presented. Payment is usually expected by return.

The act of commissioning a memorial to a loved-one need not be traumatic; in fact it can often be comforting and uplifting, knowing that the person is being honoured with a carefully considered, beautifully hand-made, modest work of art.
